There will be no small talk before – and no sweet nothings afterwards. In fact, not a single word will pass our lips for the next two hours. Well, why not just cut the awkward chit-chat and make silence the starting point? Silent speed dating is the latest way single Londoners can seek true love. At Shhh Dating that means 15 one-minute dates in one evening and zero conversation. Gone is the pressure to make small talk. I visit one Monday night and join the female daters gathered upstairs in a pub on the Strand. Eighty-five percent of communication is non-verbal anyway, host Lucy Baker tells us, before leading a few warm-up exercises.

In the first round, sounds and gestures are allowed, just no words. I take my seat opposite a nice-looking chap who turns out to be an effective mime eat your heart out Marcel Marceau. Not a bad start. There are gritted teeth and flapping hands. One guy is even mouthing words, which is certainly not allowed. The second round is completely silent. But the night ends with a good few ticks on my date sheet. Lucy tells us we can stay and chat if we want, and the room erupts with animated voices.

There was an international, eclectic mix of people at both of these events, which I attended in and Without meaning to generalise too much, I would say that these events seem to attract the more cultured, educated and somewhat quirky professionals just what I was looking for who are looking for something a little different from the more conventional single parties which are hosted by other companies such as Speed Dater, for example.

The ice-breaking games were very original and provided us with a new way of connecting with other people. By the end of the evening when everybody was allowed to speak , the atmosphere was fantastic and although I did not meet “the one” I had a wonderful evening and connected with some great like-minded individuals. If you would like to try something different and you are willing to step out of your comfort zone just a little bit, I would highly recommend this.

Dating in is gimmicky There’s no getting around it! And silent dating is very gimmicky – it’s unlikely you’ll do it more than once, unless you’re very thespy. There’s an acting class-like warm-up, followed by various speed-date like sessions, with varying degrees of communication. The whole thing is really well organised, and when I went, interestingly there were far more ‘normal’ seeming men than I’ve ever seen before at a speed-dating style event.

You definitely get what you put in. And if you’re not sure what to do, by all means, let your speed dating partner take the lead. Once I stopped trying to control the ‘conversations’ I had, I realised just how varied non-verbal communication can be!
