Facebook is testing a dating feature for its users. The feature appears to be integrated into Facebook’s normal social network and allows them to search out dates from among their network. Computer scientist Jane Manchun Wong first spotted code for the dating feature, after reverse-engineering the code of Facebook’s most recent version of its app. The testing process of the new feature, known as ‘dogfooding’, is designed to uncover any bugs or issues before it is officially launched for all users. The dating app comes with a feature called “Conversation Starter” to help people initiate chats with potential matches.

February 11, by Jennifer Dutcher. Amy Webb used data science to find love. After a difficult breakup of a relationship when she was 30, and feeling the pressure of her heavily involved family, this data geek started crunching numbers to try to calculate her odds of finding a man in Philadelphia who would be a match for her needs and personality. The result? Out of the 1. A data fanatic, Webb decided to try online dating, since the matches are based on algorithms — a methodical system that appealed to her.

After a number of bad experiences, she decided to start tracking data points during her lousy dates, which helped her discover that the limitation of the dating algorithms were defined by the user-generated data that was inputted into online profiles. She also felt that the questions in the profiles were too superficial for her purposes. Taking matters into her own hands, she decided to use the online dating programs as databases to reverse-engineer the system and create her own questions based on her desired traits in a mate.

She ended up with 72 different data points, which she prioritized into a two-tier ranking system. She then built a scoring system that helped her mathematically calculate whether the man she found online would be a match for her. Her system worked to a point — until she realized that her scoring system needed to be a two-way street. The men she picked needed to pick her back. In order to maximize her profile, she created fake male profiles to perform market research that would enable her to create qualitative and quantitative data sets.

Her hard work paid off. Amy Webb was previously an award-winning reporter for Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal, and is the author of Data: A Love Story. She heads the digital strategy house Webbmedia Group , and is the founder of SparkCamp , a weekend discussion series that focuses on big ideas around media. Facebook is trying to get into the dating game — and we’ve just had our first proper glimpse at how it might look. The company is now testing its “Facebook Dating” feature internally. App researcher and reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong dug up the signup screen for the new feature, and shared screenshots on Twitter on Friday. We’ve republished her screenshots here, with permission. The screenshots provide a new insight into how Facebook is planning to dip its toe into the world of dating, as well as the precautions it is taking to prevent abuse among its workforce.

Convinced that the security and privacy of your online dating service is worth a second look? As Katie Knibbs reports for The Daily Dot, there are a few precautions you can take and privacy settings you can change to preserve the confidentiality of your Tinder usage. Some users have held out on making a Tinder account until the company decides to enable users to sign up without sharing their Facebook logins — though you may end up waiting a while for that kind of privacy-minded option. An alternative is to create a Facebook account just for your Tinder use. The company fixed the vulnerability, which would have been a good thing except that the fix created another vulnerability by replacing the latitude and longitude coordinates with precise measurements in miles to 15 decimal places. With some basic triangulation and three dummy accounts, a stalker could figure out exactly where a user is. As it is, security researchers could track where volunteer users went to work, what gyms they exercised at, where they slept at night, and other places that they frequented. The privacy implications are obvious, and are something that Grindr should take more seriously, especially because of the continuing frequency of attacks on LGBT individuals. Luckily, not every privacy violation on the part of a dating app or website will leave your location vulnerable to stalkers. The Facebook login is intended to make it easier for users to log in to the dating service without having to remember another password.

Secrets of Reverse Engineering is a textbook written by Eldad Eilam on the subject of reverse engineering software, mainly within a Microsoft Windows environment. It covers the use of debuggers and other low-level tools for working with binaries. Of particular interest is that it uses OllyDbg in examples, and is therefore one of the few practical, modern books on the subject that uses popular, real-world tools to facilitate learning. The book is designed for independent study and does not contain problem sets , but it is also used as a course book in some university classes. The book covers several different aspects of reverse engineering, and demonstrates what can be accomplished:.
