If you live in or around Manchester and enjoy walking, whether it be gentle or strenuous, the Greater Manchester and High Peak Area of the Ramblers and its associated groups organise hundreds of walks throughout the year, so there is sure to be something for you.

February Taking a camera for a walk…. Walking is my passion, second to photography. Nothing is more human than our capacity to walk upright. My dog accompanies me on long ambles through the extensive bush lands nearby. Her perspective is ground-level and it is olfactory; she rarely raises her head from a profusion of signs that I cannot even detect. For me the landscape covers near and far, above and below. I am in and on and through the rises, the steeps, crevices and flats of it, my body borne up by it. After a few hundred metres it becomes effortless, the exertion is forgotten and attention is turned to the surroundings and the inner landscape of thoughts and fancies that pass in a blur like the track underfoot. The daughter of Sidney Simmonds, a British diplomat who had married Stella MacLean, an American artist, Fay was educated in schools around the world before in she settled in England.

Walk the Classic Camino with Ramblers and Walk Magazine

Surrey is a great place to go walking. The most wooded county in England offers some of South East England’s most beautiful and accessible countryside. Each group organises two or more walks every week. A group walk is a great way to get some exercise in a sociable atmosphere. You’re welcome to attend up to three walks before joining the Ramblers. Members can walk with any group, receive discounts at outdoor shops, and help Ramblers defend Britain’s unique rights of way network. Meetings will be held in different parts of the Area. They will be preceded by a walk and pub or picnic lunch to which members of the local group will be warmly invited. The idea is to for members and Area Officers to get to know each other. It’s also an opportunity for you to find out more about Surrey Area’s role in the Ramblers.

For the winter edition of Walk Magazine we are giving away a very special trip for two on the Camino Frances in our Walk Magazine competition. The Ramblers is a charity whose goal is to protect the ability of people to enjoy the sense of freedom and benefits that come from being outdoors on foot. They support and protect a network of beautiful trails in the UK. All of the rambler members are walking and outdoor enthusiasts, committed to maintaining the trails. Founded in , the Ramblers Association has now grown to include over local groups and over , members. On the trail you will walk the classic Camino route, collecting your pilgrim passport stamps and meeting fellow pilgrims along the way.

Our hikes are organised to suit different levels, and are divided into different grades. Each hike has an associated leader.
