Our vetting process is what makes us so unique. In New York, they have plenty of women, but not enough men. The opposite is true for San Francisco.

New York’s Most Successful Matchmakers Explain Their Vetting Process

Nikki Lewis and Greta Tufvesson are cofounders of The Bevy, a bespoke and exclusive matchmaking service that carefully curates the dating experience. After building one of the largest matchmaking firms in the country, the cofounders noticed a need for personal introductions and branched off to create The Bevy in But as word of their 95 percent success rate gets out, it’s likely that people in other cities will want to get set up and take a break from swiping.

Nikki Lewis and Greta Tufvesson: There was a disconnect in the dating market. With technology being so ubiquitous, all the mystery in life and relationships had dissipated. We wanted to come full circle and bring back the face-to-face introduction. History has a funny way of repeating itself, and we felt that toying too much with tradition was futile. This was a natural progression career-wise for us both in unique ways.

I graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and knew that my theatrical experience gave me the people skills and high emotional intelligence necessary to cope empathetically with different types of people and their interpersonal relationships. What has been the biggest challenge and, on the flip side, the biggest reward of starting The Bevy?

Lewis and Tufvesson: From the beginning, we decided that this company was going to grow solely by referral, not advertising. In a digital world, everyone is trying to serve ads, swipe right and left or connect through social media. It was a real gamble for us to shy away from that and get business exclusively through word of mouth. What advice do you have for other women who hope to start their own businesses?

First, get a financial professional involved from the beginning — no amount of hard work or great ideas can overcome poor corporate finance decisions. Secondly, understand your definition of success. Thirdly, hire people who are smarter than you. Every day starts with our to-do list. It may be going over submissions, discussing date feedback with clients or planning their next dates.

Most days are spent meeting women over coffee, rather than behind a computer. We outsource computer time to our team, but we will never delegate actual face time to anyone else. We are strict about meeting all members in-person ourselves. As co-founders, we divide, delegate and set projects into motion. The two of us have crucial responsibilities to meet potential members in several cities.

Our team is responsible for operations such as maintaining our database, dealing with logistics or growing awareness. What are the most important characteristics someone needs to have to be successful in your role? Above all, you need to be a great listener and a great communicator. We spend more time listening than speaking, which admittedly is not easy. Patience and empathy are key in dealing with different clients with different needs and backgrounds.

What are the most important skills for doing your job and how did you develop them? As we have evolved and grown, we have become more comfortable in our own skin. We never shy away from expressing our real opinions, advice and ways to improve. Perception is not reality. Our clients are dealing with real life issues at work and at home. Focus your energy on what you can control and how you can continue working and growing. What is one thing that you wish you had known when you were starting out your career?

The Bevy has a 95 percent success rate. What do you attribute that success rate to? We learned throughout the years that we are only as good as the members we decide to work with. We will never work with a man or woman we wouldn’t invite to our own dinner table or set up with our best friend. It is because of our selectivity that we are able to be successful in pairing up these remarkable people.

Love yourself before you expect anyone else to love you. People are constantly working on improving themselves but, in the meantime, have a good sense of who you are and know your strengths and weaknesses. Confidence is one of the most important qualities for forming a relationship. What are your top tips for making a long-term relationship or marriage work? Life is not a bed of roses. In long-term relationships, life has a funny way of presenting serious curveballs.

Your partner loses their job, someone becomes ill or you fight about relocating or finances. Expect that these things will happen, so gauge each other early on in the relationship to grab a sense of how your partner deals with hardship or change. Furthermore, marriage is about compromise and learning. You may need to travel far for family obligations, learn about new traditions and spend time with new friends — these are all good things.

Relationships last when you can learn from each other — you never want to get too stuck in your own ways. Lean into your talents and strengths, and don’t try to be someone else. You can always be the best you, but you will always be second best if you are trying to be someone else. Hard work and preparation can cover a lot of deficiencies.

Also, feeling your best is highly important. Everything from your outfit, health and mental wellbeing are critical. If you like yourself, others will too. Find her at elanalyn.
