The trick, however, is to find this clean-out, because few homeowners know where they are. Why not use the RV or camper? Is it possible to dump your RV tanks into your septic tank? In a camper or RV, chemicals are often used to help deodorize the area and also further break down some of the solids and paper. However, some of these chemicals are toxic and can be destructive to the natural balance of bacteria living in a septic tank. There are anaerobic and aerobic organisms. The aerobic require a certain amount of oxygen, while the anaerobic does not. When certain toxins are used, the good bacteria may die off which can lead to blockage, backflow and even flooding of the drain field. Furthermore, the chemicals can contaminate the soil, ground water , and even surface water. When this happens, cleanup is costly and potentially devastating for life underground. Campgrounds or dumping sites have their own way of disposing the waste without dangers of contamination. Remember to read up on the regulations the individual dump sites or campgrounds have before dumping your tanks.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions Answer

A constant battle with traveling across the USA is water quality and taste. In the first couple years we used to test our water at each campground but it was such a pain, now we always use a filter system. A standard hose carbon filter is a great starting point for filtration, we prefer the Culligan brand because it has a higher flow rate and lasts longer than the Camco version both are fine. From there we run our water through the softener which removes more contaminants and reduces calcium which can destroy plumbing, fixtures and your water heater. Of the few RV parks we visit in our travels only a small handful have cable, and of those only a couple have a quality non-static signal. We have an entire article about sewer connections along with tips, tricks and product links that you can read and watch the video here:.

My husband lives full time in our 5th wheel because of his job and lately, we have been having sewer smells. The camper sits for a long time without moving. Are we suppose to keep the black water tank closed and dump it every so often or can we keep it open and use the toilet and flush and the waste goes out? Give me some advice on what to do. Hi Claudia, even when you are hooked up to a sewer system at an RV park you should always keep the dump valves closed on both your grey water and black water holding tanks. You will also accumulate a lot of bad smelling human deposits on the bottom of your black water tank as the liquid will go directly in the sewer system and the solids will remain and cause a bad smell that will also enter the trailer. You then close the dump valves and pour about two or three gallons of water into both holding tanks, so the future waste will be diluted by the water at the bottom of the tank.
